Animal Welfare Project in Las Peñitas de León, Nicaragua

Who We Are

Amigos de los Animalitos is a small, grassroots, not-for-profit animal welfare project located in the rural beach community of Las Peñitas de León, Nicaragua. We are working to bring important animal welfare services to the community through sterilization clinics, general veterinary services, and educational initiatives.

There is no veterinarian in our village of Las Peñitas, Nicaragua, so the vast majority of animals never receive much-needed veterinary care, including basic vaccines and sterilizations. As a result, our animal community is greatly suffering from overpopulation and the spread of diseases, notably the sexually transmissible cancer TVT. We are working together with the incredible team of veterinarians at EAN Veterinarios from the city of León to provide these important services to our local dogs and cats.

We hosted our first sterilization clinic for the public on December 12, 2024, and successfully sterilized 41 dogs and cats. Our following clinic was targeted at street animals without owners and high-risk animals, and we sterilized and provided aftercare for 12 dogs and cats. Our next public clinic is scheduled for March 26, 2025, when we will sterilize another 40 animals. Visit our events blog for updates on our current projects.

Amigos de los Animalitos is a newly formed project, but our organizers and volunteers have a longstanding history of animal welfare efforts in the community, and we plan to continue to grow this endeavor in depth and scope. Please reach out if you'd like to get involved!

What We Do

Sterilization and Veterinary Services

We are committed to providing essential sterilization and veterinary services to address the health and overpopulation challenges faced by the animal community in Las Peñitas. To join our clinics, pet owners are asked to contribute a fee of 100 córdobas  (about USD$3) per animal, which includes sterilization surgery, antibiotics, and topical flea and tick treatment. Our aim is to provide this service to the community at a very accessible fee, while engaging pet owners in responsible practices.

Community Education

We believe in the power of education to create a sustainable impact. We are always looking for new, effective, and responsible ways to engage and educate the community. We aim to raise awareness about animal welfare, responsible pet care, and the importance of sterilization and vaccinations to promote a healthier and more harmonious coexistence between humans and animals. Please reach out to us if you'd like to participate in our educational outreach efforts.

Animal Rescue and Fostering

Our organizers and volunteers have a longstanding history in the community of providing rescue and fostering services to animals in need. We aim to provide vulnerable animals with  safe, loving homes until they can find great forever families. Through compassionate care and community support, we work to give abandoned, stray, and at-risk animals a second chance at life.
