Who We Are

Teya-Meya: Amigos de los Animalitos is a small, grassroots, not-for-profit animal welfare project located in the rural beach community of Las Peñitas de León, Nicaragua. We are working to bring important animal welfare services to the community through sterilization clinics, general veterinary services, and educational initiatives.

OUR MISSION extends beyond immediate relief efforts; we aim to establish a permanent animal rescue and veterinary facility in Las Peñitas/Poneloya. This facility will serve as a beacon of hope and care, ensuring that every animal receives the love and medical attention it deserves.

Your support will help us to provide vital resources for further sterilization clinics, comprehensive veterinary care, and educational programs. By donating, you are joining a compassionate community dedicated to creating a healthier, happier environment for all animals and families in the area of Las Peñitas and Poneloya de León, Nicaragua.

Thank you for being a part of our mission of hope and compassion. ¡Muchas gracias!

Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of los animalitos~ ¡Juntos podemos!

We work with the incredible team of qualified veterinarians at Clinica Veterinaria EAN in Leon to provide compassionate and accessible veterinary care to our community on a PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN basis. That means no animal must suffer from lack of attention due to someone's ability to pay. We attend to street dogs and cats, pets with impoverished owners who can only contribute a few pesos, and anyone who seeks our help.

Our community has long-suffered from animal overpopulation, disease, and lack of access to basic veterinary care, including vaccinations and sterilization.

So far, we have sterilized hundreds of dogs and cats, hosted multiple vaccination brigades to combat local outbreaks of parvovirus and distemper (over 1,000 vaccines!), provided chemotherapy treatments for dogs with TVT cancer, given consults and sponsored treatments, helped animals in emergencies, rescued and adopted many abandoned, abused, and unwanted animals, and improved the street dog and cat populations. And we continue to work to build a healthy community with more knowledge of, compassion for, and access to animal welfare.

What We Do

Sterilization and Veterinary Services

We are committed to providing essential sterilization and veterinary services to address the health and overpopulation challenges faced by the animal community in Las Peñitas. To join our clinics, pet owners are asked to contribute a fee of 100 córdobas  (about USD$3) per animal, which includes sterilization surgery, antibiotics, and topical flea and tick treatment. Our aim is to provide this service to the community at a very accessible fee, while engaging pet owners in responsible practices.

Community Education

We believe in the power of education to create a sustainable impact. We are always looking for new, effective, and responsible ways to engage and educate the community. We aim to raise awareness about animal welfare, responsible pet care, and the importance of sterilization and vaccinations to promote a healthier and more harmonious coexistence between humans and animals. Please reach out to us if you'd like to participate in our educational outreach efforts.

Animal Rescue and Fostering

Our organizers and volunteers have a longstanding history in the community of providing rescue and fostering services to animals in need. We aim to provide vulnerable animals with  safe, loving homes until they can find great forever families. Through compassionate care and community support, we work to give abandoned, stray, and at-risk animals a second chance at life.
